my favorite month is here !!
Pride month is a time for celebrating and supporting the LGBTQ+ community! If you’re a part of the LGBTQ+ community or an ally, this is a time for all of us to join together and celebrate love and acceptance. Get out your rainbow gear & join us.
Pride month is celebrated throughout the nation through parades, drag performances, memorials, live music, activists.
2022 Pride Fest in Kansas City is June 10th-12th at Theis Park, right next to the Plaza.
Why is pride month in June?
June marks the month & anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall uprising. Police raided the Stonewall Inn, which was a bar located in NYC and was known to be a bar for the gay, lesbian, and transgender community. In 1969, homosexual acts were illegal in every state except Illinois. On this night, the civilians in this bar decided to not stay silent & to fight back. This moment went on for approx. six says for the goals and hopes of gay liberation and LGBT rights in the Unites States.
How can you show your support to the community?
educate yourself on LGBTQ+ matters and organizations
be inclusive
speak up if you hear or see a situation that could be offensive or discriminatory towards this community
don’t stereotype anyone
use the correct pronouns of the individual. if someone corrects you on their pronouns, apologize and correct yourself.
don’t out someone to another individual
be vocal about being an ally. attend parades with them, rallies, etc.
